Digital Paintings

The step by step process in the creation of a digital painting.

Digital paintings are created using the technology available in digital photo editing programs. On the computer there are brushes, paint, and canvas. These tools can be used to create a realistic effect, or the look of a true canvas painting. Digital Paintings can be created from one photo, or several photos merged together. (These come to you on CD in several different file formats. Prints may be purchased.)

A digital painting begins with a high quality scan of the original photo. (This painting will be realistic, and not have brush strokes.
Flat color is added to the large portions of the image.
Shadows are painted over the flat color.
Details such as the eyebrows, eyes, and lips are painted.
Deeper shadows are painted into parts of the image, and highlights are painted in as well.
The tree bark and leaves are painted into the background.
The hair is added last since it sits on top of much of the image. Final touch up of the digital painting includes blurring and sharpening certain parts of the image, and adjusting the overall tonal value.
