First sketch, cleaned up with an eraser, to establish the placement of the figures. (19x24 Bristol paper) Initial shading of the first figure. Started with a 6B pencil to add some darkness to eyes and dark streaks in hair. Shaded with a soft cloth and powdered graphite. Completion of the first figure, and partial shading of the background. I created the background effect with a soft paper towel dipped in powdered graphite, and then dabbed on the paper.
Initial shading of the second figure. I did some indenting with a 2H pencil in the beard and hair first to create texture for the hair. Final shading of second figure and continued work on banner and background. I used powdered graphite on a cloth and an 8B woodless graphite pencil for his hair. Initial shading of last figure. Started adding some dark values with a 6B pencil and shading with a soft cloth.

Completed drawing.

I always clean up highlights with a rubber eraser. I also used an eraser to create the background"glow". After dabbing on the graphite, I pulled the eraser back through it. I added lots of detail to the drawing, so it took several hours to complete.
